Getting in Touch
Developing the bond with your baby
Getting in Touch is a group for parents who have recently welcomed a baby into their family
through adoption. It focuses on deepening the connection between parent and child through
the use of infant massage, group support and guided discussion.
Each of the six weekly 90-minute sessions includes quiet time for infant massage, with a focus
on helping parents read babies’ signals and increasing the enjoyment of both parent and baby.
Each session includes simple guided relaxation techniques to help parents manage stress and
discussion time for group members to share their concerns in a supportive environment.
Discussion topics will include:
• bonding and attachment
• your adoption experience and your relationship with your child’s birth family
• expectations and reality–the transition from the experience you imagined
to the reality of day to day care for your baby
• privacy versus secrecy-handling questions and assumptions that friends and family
have about your child’s history and birth family
• the process of bonding with your baby and aspects of the adoption experience
that pose challenges to feeling fully like mom or dad
The group is led by Diane Lostrangio, LICSW. Diane has provided pre and post adoption services
to foster and adoptive families for over twenty years and has post graduate training in infant
mental health and infant massage techniques. She is also an adoptive parent.
Infants participating in the group should be between 1 month and 7 months of age.
Getting in Touch sessions take place at Cooper House on Capitol Hill (near Group Health
Hospital); cost for the 6 session group is $180.
